Puerta Del Abra 2020 Albarino, Argentina
Puerta del Abra’s 2020 Insólito Albariño lands softly—less of a splash, more of a breath of fresh air. Aromas of white peach and apricot spill gently from the glass, lifted by jasmine and tuberose perfume, and threaded through with a whisper of sweet briar and spice. It’s expressive without being showy.
The palate follows suit with a seamless balance of weight and lift. There’s a rounded texture from six months on fine lees, but it stays energized—crisp enough to feel alive, not soft. The finish trails off with mineral clarity and a trace of saline breath, anchoring the wine in place.
Part of what gives this Albariño purpose is its place. Balcarce isn’t Mendoza; it’s a low‑altitude coastal fringe in Buenos Aires Province, cooled by sea air and ancient mountains. Puerta del Abra’s jagged limestone soils and maritime influence shape low‑alcohol grapes with both finesse and freshness—vindication of the region’s identity as one of Argentina’s newest GI.
The winery leans quietly audacious. Founded by Jorge Pérez Companc, this personal project focused on exploring terroir that didn’t follow the well-worn path. Family‑run, hand‑harvested, and limited in scale, the wines feel thoughtful, refined, and quietly confident—without being dramatic.
This isn’t Albariño chasing volume or ripe spectacle. It invites presence—sits neatly beside oysters or summer salads, and stays pointed enough to remember. A sleek, honest reflection of place, made for drinking—not performance.
