Richoux 2021 Irancy Bourgogne Rouge
A few years ago, we had never even heard of Irancy, and now we are starting to see quite a few producers from this tiny region. Tucked just southwest of Chablis with similar soils, there is a distinct seashell and limestone aroma that just adds more charm to this already beguiling wine. Nice flint, crunch red berries, smoke and slightly green flavors with flower shop-like notes. It is light-bodied, but not thin, with plenty of stuffing here, making it a wonderful partner to fish, simple roast pork and beef dishes.
A side note: while visiting a wonderful restaurant south of Auxerre, and again at a brasserie in Tours, we saw a menu item that said "Oeufs en Meurette d'Irancy". Poaching your eggs in the red wines of Irancy is definitely a thing. We found a recipe from Saveur one year and it is like eating wine-poached eggs on a rich brioche toast covered with Boeuf Bourguignon sauce.
