Vino Progreso "Overground" 2022 Tannat, Uruguay
The Vino Progreso “Overground” 2022 Tannat washes in deep—ripe black cherry and red plum edge forward, wrapped in whispers of smoky clay and wild thyme. It doesn’t show off; it steps firmly in place, grounded in clarity not curl.
On the palate, tension and texture meet with ease. Fruit is bold but not flabby, threaded with tannins that feel structured and smooth—built, not bloated. A dusting of earth lingers at the finish, leaving the glass cleaner, sharper. That contrast—intensity with restraint—keeps it vivid sip after sip.
This is not standard Tannat. In Uruguay, the grape takes on a softer, more lifted identity—fresher, less tannic than Madiran’s old-world counterpart. And in this bottle, winemaker Gabriel Pisano leans into that freshness. The Overground label is deliberate: more approachable, fruit-forward, and expressive of the temperate, slow-maturing climate of Uruguay’s Progreso region, near the Atlantic.
Pisano’s “experimental” approach shows too—in every wine. He ferments with natural yeasts, minimizes sulfites, and lets site speak. Overground isn’t a styled statement—it’s his everyday Tannat: layered, aromatic, balanced by sea breezes and calcareous soils.
This Tannat is for meals that stretch: asado, aged cheeses, or even a simple stew punctuated by stillness. It doesn’t demand attention—it holds space.
Vino Progreso “Overground” 2022 Tannat—Uruguay’s latitude in fruit and clarity, found in a glass.
