OCTOBER SPIRIT OF THE MONTH--CONVITE UNA MEZCAL
October’s Spirit of the Month is Convite Una Mezcal. This Espadin-based Mezcal is naturally tinted with Cochineal. So, if any of you are missing that from your Campari, you know where to find it! A lightly smoked profile leads to vibrant white pepper, giving you that herbal characteristic agave is known for. Soft soil notes bring an earthiness to the spirit, pairing well with the herbal flavors, minerality keeps the profile light and brings out more vegetal essences on the finish. While the use of Cochineal insects gives the Una Mezcal a distinct color, it is also to recognize that Convite gives 10% of their proceeds from Una to FUCAM, a Mexican breast cancer charity.
Located in the Zapotec Mountains of San Baltazar Guelavila, Oaxaca, Convite uses their unique location to create a nursery for normally wild agaves they work with, in 2018, they planted 500,000 agave plants. 6 years later, a small portion of those plants might be matured, but most will come of age in the next 10 years. They also collaborate with one Palenque (distillery), led by Master Distillers Daniel and Cosme Hernandez, who only work with local families/farmers to get their agave. Any waste made in the production of their Mezcal gets turned into fertilizer that is used in the nursery. Convite has Focused on keeping as much money in circulation in Oaxaca as possible, all Convite’s employees live in Oaxaca and all offices are in Oaxaca.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And while giant cooperations like the NFL like to highlight their care for the singular month, once November 1st hits, all the pink is gone from the scene. We’ve been carrying Convite year-round and have no intention of stopping. Just like how Convite themselves have no intention to stop giving a part of their proceeds to help women in need and take care of the people of Oaxaca.
