Affordable White Burgundies You Shouldn’t Miss

Jump to Recommendations

The legendary home of the world's greatest dry white wines is Burgundy. The whole world reveres its top vineyards in Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, and, sadly, prices have shot beyond reasonableness for most of us. Even the Côte de Beaune regions of Saint-Aubin and Saint-Romain are now approaching $100 a bottle when just a few years ago, they were considered the "bargains" of white Burgundy.

The good news is there are still hidden corners of Burgundy where we can still discover satisfying white wines we can all afford, a few of which lie in southern Burgundy's Mâconnais region and northern Burgundy's Chablis. We've even discovered a few over-achievers in the high rent district of the Côte de Beaune that will provide thrills with your Sunday chicken dinner.

Our Recommendations

Famille Barraud 2024 Macon-Fuisse Les ChaillesFamille Barraud 2024 Mâcon-Fuissé "Les Chailles"    $31.99
This is old school white Mâconnais, clean and minerally from start to the long, long finish. Very Pouilly-Fuissé-like, reminding me of those great wines before climate warming made most Pouilly-Fuissé-adjacent wines overly fruity and a bit flabby. The Barraud family estate in the exclusive Vergisson area was established in 1905 and recently had their vineyards certified organic. Excellent wine.

Domaine de la Denante 2024 Saint-Veran Vieilles VignesDomaine de la Denante 2024 Saint-Véran Vieilles Vignes    $23.99
New to The Wine Country, this is a gorgeous white Burgundy, richly flavored with a pedigree fruit that can only come from old vines. With medium weight and texture, the wine captures the excellence of the Saint-Véran appellation. I could drink this over and over again without tiring.

Manciat-Poncet 2023 Macon-Charnay Les ChenesManciat-Poncet 2023 Mâcon-Charnay "Les Chênes"    $22.99
For 28 vintages, this no-oak beauty has been our best-selling white Burgundy by a large margin. It's attractive in so many ways, round texture, clean aromas, fresh tasting and elegant far beyond its modest price.

Domaine Maratray-Dubreuil 2023 Ladoix Blanc 1er Cru Les GrechonsDomaine Maratray-Dubreuil 2023 Ladoix Blanc 1er Cru "Les Grechons"    $66.99
We were very lucky to be able to snag a few bottles of this outstanding white Burgundy—only 10 cases were imported to California. Just 15% of Ladoix plantings are white grapes. Everything about the wine appeals to us. Gorgeous aroma, luxurious mouthfeel, incredible, rich flavors. Do yourself a favor and snag a bottle while it's still here.

Fabrice Larochette 2024 Bourgogne Blanc ChardonnayFabrice Larochette 2024 Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay    $23.99
This straightforward unoaked Chardonnay from southern Burgundy was a hit last vintage and the 2024 is a bright follow up. Ideal as a starter. A favorite at our recent Saturday white Burgundy event.

Henri & Gilles Buisson 2023 Bourgogne BlancHenri & Gilles Buisson 2023 Bourgogne Blanc    $33.99
Located in the Côte d'Or village of Saint-Romain, the Buisson estate practices organic farming on their hillside vineyard 300 meters in elevation. With a little toast in the aroma, this ripe, viscous Chardonnay offers a faint hint of caramel in its delectable finish. Expert winemaking.

Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon 2024 Macon-Uchizy Les MaranchesLes Héritiers du Comte Lafon 2024 Mâcon-Uchizy "Les Maranches"    $41.99
"The 2024 Mâcon-Uchizy Les Maranches has an attractive nose with sea cave/marine scents unfolding in the glass. The palate is well balanced with a fine prickle of acidity, fine weight and a little more persistence on the finish compared to the other cuvées. This comes recommended." —Neal Martin, Vinous
